About us
Walking For Pleasure is a community organization which aims to increase levels
of fitness in a social atmosphere through recreational walking. The organization
began in 1987 with Government assistance, but these days we are completely
independent and have over 400 members.
Canberra's abundance of open spaces,
parks, lakes and forests creates a superb environment for walking.
Volunteer walk leaders pool their knowledge for good walking routes so that
we are able to present a program of around 60 different walks in each
three-month period. Consequently, participants get to fully explore and
enjoy our natural environment and places of interest.
Joining a regular ongoing walk program is a simple and enjoyable way of life.
Walking is oneof the safest aerobic activities and it can usually be continued
into very senior years.
Social contact is clearly another benefit of walking in a group, particularly
for thoseliving alone, working from home or adjusting to retirement. Just getting
out into the natural environment does much to lift our spirits, butincreased
fitness also raises our self-esteem and general sense of well-being.
